Vesuvius is easy to find, located on Virginia Scenic Byway Rt. 56 (Tye River Tpk) at the intersection with Rt. 608 (South River Road). Vesuvius is located at the base of South Mountain along one of the main access points to the Blue Ridge Parkway at mile post 27.
The Village of Vesuvius dates its existence back to 1828, when the Vesuvius Furnace was built. The Vesuvius Foundry, which made plows and farm implements, began operations in 1843. The Village began to bustle when the Shenandoah Valley Railroad came through in 1882. The Vesuvius Post Office followed and the village soon became the center for commerce in the northeast corner of Rockbridge County.
